If you want to identify top talent for a job, you must ask the right questions during the interview and that takes preparation.

These 5 must-ask interview questions will help you get a good sense of whether this potential employee could be a successful member of your team.

So, let’s jump in with 5 of the best questions to ask an interviewee, and why.

1. What do you know about our company and why do you want to work here?

You would think candidates would do their homework prior to an interview, but this is not always the case. Start out with this interview question and you’ll find out quickly who is sincerely interested in working for you — and who isn’t.

2. What could your current company do to be more successful?

This question can help you see if the potential candidate looks at the big picture at their current organization. It also could give you better context as to why they might be looking for a new opportunity.

3. Can you tell me about a time when you had a disagreement with a boss or colleague and how you handled the situation?

This is one of the best questions to ask when conducting and interview as it will give you a good sense of the individuals conflict-resolution abilities. Try to catch what tone the person uses when talking about the other people and if they were able to handle the situation described appropriately. Emotional intelligence is needed in almost every job.

4. How would your coworkers describe you?

This is a great question to test the candidate on their soft skills and how well they might work with the members of your own team. By understanding the strengths of your current staff, this question will help you filter candidates who will compliment your team.

5. What’s one fact that’s not on your LinkedIn profile?

This is a great open-ended question to ask a candidate to help uncover personal insights, hobbies, or motivations outside of their 9-5. It can also be helpful to spark some conversation about their interests and how relatable they might be to your current team and culture.

Bonus: Always ask to candidate to see if they have any questions for you at the end of the interview.
